Poland’s Largest Bank Using Blockchain to Maintain Cultural Heritage

Poland’s second-largest bank, Bank Pekao, uses blockchain technology to help preserve the country’s cultural heritage.

The bank has partnered with Aleph Zero, a blockchain platform, to launch Archiv3. This project focuses on tokenizing Polish artwork to store it securely for future generations.

Tokenization is a method where physical assets, like artwork, are converted into digital tokens on a blockchain. This makes the art easier to store, track, and protect. For this particular project, famous Polish artworks, including those by renowned artists Jan Matejko and Stanisław Wyspiański, are being digitized.

They use advanced 3D scanning technology to create digital versions of the art. These digital artworks are then stored as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the Aleph Zero blockchain. This ensures that these cultural treasures are preserved for the long term.

In addition to being stored on the blockchain, the digital artworks will also be safeguarded in the Arctic World Archive (AWA), located in Svalbard, Norway. This facility is designed to protect important data from various threats, such as cyberattacks and natural disasters. AWA already stores critical cultural and scientific data from major institutions like UNESCO and the Vatican.

By using blockchain’s decentralized and secure system, Bank Pekao aims to make sure that these valuable pieces of art remain accessible and safe, even if there is a global crisis in the future.
