Beware! A New Scam by AI Technology “Digital Arrest” Have Been Founded

A new online scam technology “digital arrest” has been found. A digital arrest is a new type of online scam where fraudsters trick people into thinking they are under virtual arrest using AI-generated video and audio. The scammer makes the victim stay on a video call for a long time, using fear to control them. This way, the victim feels like they have no choice but to follow the scammer’s demands.

In these scams, the criminals pretend to be someone important, like a law officer or company, to get personal information. They scare the victim with fake threats, like losing money or facing legal trouble, and claim they want to help.

What makes it seem real is the use of video calls and deepfake technology, where scammers can look like someone else, even famous or trusted people.

India Businessman, A Victim of Digital Arrest

Indian businessman SP Oswal, who leads Vardhman Textiles, was scammed out of 70 million rupees (around $833,000) by criminals pretending to be officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and even the Chief Justice of India. On August 28, these fraudsters falsely accused him of being involved in money laundering through fake phone calls and online threats.

For two days, the scammers forced Oswal to keep Skype active on his phone, interrogating him and threatening to arrest him. They went as far as staging a fake virtual court hearing, using digital technology to impersonate Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. This fake “court” convinced Oswal to pay the money.

This type of scam, known as a “digital arrest,” uses video calls to trick people into staying connected and feeling trapped. Scammers use AI to create highly realistic voices and videos of officials to make the con believable.

A digital arrest is similar to phishing, where criminals pretend to be trusted authorities to steal information. However, digital arrests are more advanced, using deepfake technology and video conferencing to make the scam appear even more genuine. With AI, scammers can mimic both the voices and looks of important figures, making it easier to deceive victims.
